Stay Compliant With Your Texas Adjuster Continuing Education (CE)

If you hold a Texas adjuster license, continuing education is not optional. Miss your hours and you face fines, and eventually a lapsed license. The good news: staying compliant is simple once you know the rules and plan ahead. Here is what Texas requires and how to stay on track.
What Texas Requires for Adjuster CE
According to the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI), licensed adjusters, including all-lines and public adjusters, must complete:
- 24 hours of CE every two-year license period
- 3 of those hours in ethics
- At least half of the hours in a classroom or classroom-equivalent format
All hours must be completed before your license expiration date. TDI encourages finishing at least 30 days early so your course provider has time to report your completion.
What Happens If You Fall Behind
If your hours are not complete when your license expires, TDI gives you 90 days to finish them and pay a fine of $50 for each missing hour. If you do not finish within those 90 days, your license is inactivated and you must apply for a new one. That means lost time, lost income, and starting the paperwork over.
Exemptions are rare. TDI allows them only in limited cases, such as a long-term illness or military service, and requires documentation. A busy work season is not an accepted reason.
5 Tips to Stay Compliant
- Know your expiration date. Look it up on the TDI website and put a reminder on your calendar six months ahead.
- Start early. Spread your 24 hours across your license period instead of rushing in the final weeks.
- Do your ethics hours first. They are required, and getting them done early removes the biggest risk.
- Choose approved, classroom-equivalent courses. These count toward the half that must be classroom or classroom equivalent.
- Keep your certificates. Save each completion certificate in one folder in case you ever need to show proof.
Why CE Is More Than a Requirement
Insurance keeps changing, from new regulations and policy forms to technology that is reshaping how claims are handled. Continuing education keeps your skills current, protects the policyholders you serve, and helps you stand out in a competitive job market.
